With the generous donations of countless initial funders, DCC launched the Dyaspora-Haiti Scholarship fund in the fall of 2017.
During a trip to Jacmel, Haiti in August of 2017, the founding chair of DCC, was approached by a young woman in high school with a request for financial assistance so that she may continue her schooling.
Thanks to the Initial Funders!
Many thanks to our initial funders for their generous donations, which made the Dyaspora-Haiti Scholarship Fund possible.
Unfortunately, this request is not one that is uncommon. The reality is that due to a general lack of publicly funded schools in Haiti, the majority of school-age children must enroll in private schools. The costs associated with attendance include tuition, uniforms, and school supplies. While they prioritize and strongly believe in the transformative benefits of education, most parents in Haiti who earn on average $409 USD per year are not able to afford what amounts to $425 USD for primary or $500 USD for secondary school.
Given the challenges of funding education in Haiti articulated above, the DCC created the Dyaspora-Haiti Scholarship Fund aimed at supporting students with demonstrated academic promise to continue their education.
